Paint spotlight: BMW Twilight Purple on VW Caddy
BMW Twilight Purple is such a beautiful colour that we decided to put it on a limited edition TMG VW Caddy.
You might assume all paint jobs are equal, but applying Twilight Purple, or any other metallic or pearlescent finish to a VW Caddy, requires far more skill and precision than a basic flat coating.
Unlike flat paint, metallic and pearlescent finishes on a VW Caddy demand exceptional skill. The complexity lies in maintaining consistent spray angles to prevent mottling and precisely controlling the distribution of metallic flakes.
Multiple layers must be applied with perfect timing – base coat, effect coat, and clear coat – each influencing the final appearance. Even minor variations in technique can result in visible flaws, making touch-ups particularly challenging.
Environmental controls and equipment precision become critical factors in achieving a flawless finish. For instance, TMG has a climate-controlled spray booth, and a meticulous isolation process to produce a clean environment for new paint.

Notice how the paint flows smoothy under our direct, artificial lighting? That's because our application of the BMW Twilight Purple paint was meticulous.
Our process began with careful surface preparation, sanding every panel to ensure perfect adhesion and eliminating imperfections that could show through the translucent purple finish.
We paid particular attention to the edges and contours, where paint can naturally want to pull away. The application required precise temperature and humidity control in our spray booth.
Each layer of the Twilight Purple was applied in overlapping passes at precisely 75% overlap, maintaining a consistent gun distance and angle throughout. This technique prevents any striping or uneven metallic distribution that could create visible bands under direct light.
The final clearcoat layers were applied slightly heavier than standard, allowing the metallic flakes to orient themselves and properly create that deep, liquid-like appearance. We extended our flash-off times between coats to ensure each layer set perfectly, preventing any solvent trapped between layers that could cause cloudiness in the finish.
